Magnetic Dipole Transition in Atomic Ytterbium

We present the results of an ongoing investigation designed to measure the forbidden magnetic dipole transition amplitude for the 6s2 S0 → 6s5d D1 transition (408 nm) in atomic ytterbium. The transition is excited in an effusive atiomic beam with a C.W. laser in the presence of crossed D.C. electric and magnetic fields. The fields are arranged to provide interference between the magnetic dipole...

Maximum-entropy and Padé-like approximations to atomic scattering factors

Three different methods, namely maximum entropy, combination of Dirac deltas and two-point Padé approximants, are used to construct tight model-independent approximations to the atomic form factor F(k) in terms of a few quantities related to its inverse Fourier trnsform, i.e. the one-particle density ρ(r). The accuracy of these approximations is analyzed in a Hartree-Fock framework. These extra...

Experimental investigation of excited-state lifetimes in atomic ytterbium.

Lifetimes of twenty-one excited states in atomic Yb were measured using time-resolved fluorescence detection following pulsed laser excitation. The lifetime of the 4f145d6s D1 state, which is of particular importance for a proposed study of parity nonconservation in atoms, was measured to be 380(30) ns.

Observation of a large atomic parity violation effect in ytterbium.

Atomic parity violation has been observed in the 6s(2 1)S(0)-->5d6s(3)D(1) 408-nm forbidden transition of ytterbium. The parity-violating amplitude is found to be 2 orders of magnitude larger than in cesium, where the most precise experiments to date have been performed. This is in accordance with theoretical predictions and constitutes the largest atomic parity-violating amplitude yet observed...
